As world environment day approaches again, we are reminded of all the wins and losses had for our world over the past year. Some big, memorable wins for Australia were:
But perhaps one of the biggest is seeing new eco friendly companies popping up everywhere, creating alternatives to every day products that help the environment.
At wham bam boo, our journey began much the same, with a passion and a drive to rid Noosa (and the sunshine coast) of single use plastic straws. We are very excited to celebrate world environment day and even more excited about the World environment day festival that is a plastic free event held every year in Maroochydore and is both free and family friendly. Their motto is ‘beat plastic pollution’ which couldn’t connect more with what Wham Bam boo’s mission is all about. There are artists, music, speakers, wholesome delicious food and sustainable store holders. We are partnering with our very good friends Plastic Free Noosa at their stall at the festival and there we will be selling our bamboo straws. Plastic free Noosa is a community project to reduce Noosa’s plastic footprint. Wham Bam Boo has partnered with them as a sustainable business and we share a joint goal, which is the aspiration to reduce single use plastic in Noosa by 50%. It seems daunting to some people and businesses to replace things like plastic coffee cups, packaging, containers and straws, but it is all achievable and all doable. Plastic Free Noosa have a very informative blog post which mentions alternatives to plastics for businesses, for anyone who is struggling with a conscience but don’t know how to fix the problem.
We may still have a long way to go here in Australia, but we have had a very successful couple of years and we are making drastic changes and now seeing the younger generation really adopt being plastic free is both inspirational and hopeful.
World environment day festival is held on the 3rd of June at Maroochydore Rotary Park, Cotton tree from 10am-5pm. This festival has been running since 1979 and continues to grow in the community. We will be down there selling straws and supporting both the festival and plastic free Noosa. We are so excited to be selling our biodegradable, 100% natural and reusable straws to the public and only hope this is the beginning of a new era and brings an increase of environmental wins over the next year
